Understanding Allergies and Rashes
Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, pet dander, certain foods, or insect stings. These reactions can manifest in various ways, including skin rashes. Rashes caused by allergies can vary in appearance and severity, often resulting in discomfort and irritation.
Recognizing Symptoms of Allergies and Rashes
You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate allergies and associated rashes:
- Red, Itchy Skin: Areas of the skin become red and itchy, often accompanied by swelling.
- Hives: Raised, red welts on the skin that can appear suddenly and are often very itchy.
- Eczema: Dry, scaly patches of skin that can become inflamed and itchy.
- Swelling: Swelling around the eyes, lips, or other parts of the body, which may accompany a rash.
- Sneezing and Runny Nose: Allergic rhinitis symptoms such as sneezing and a runny or stuffy nose.
- Watery Eyes: Red, itchy, and watery eyes often occur alongside skin reactions.
- Contact Dermatitis: Red, itchy rash that appears where the skin has come into contact with an allergen.
