Allergies and Hives

We treat allergies and hives in children with expert pediatric care.

Understanding Allergies

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom, pet dander, or certain foods that typically don’t cause a reaction in most people. Hives, also known as urticaria, are a common symptom of allergic reactions. They appear as raised, itchy red welts on the skin and can vary in size and shape. Allergies and hives can range from mild to severe and can be triggered by various allergens.

Recognizing Symptoms of Allergic Conditions

You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate allergies and hives:

  • Itchy Skin: Intense itching, which can be localized or spread across the body.
  • Red Welts: Raised, red welts on the skin that can vary in size and shape, often appearing suddenly.
  • Swelling: Swelling of the skin, lips, eyes, or other parts of the body.
  • Runny or Stuffy Nose: Symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny or congested nose.
  • Watery Eyes: Red, itchy, and watery eyes, often accompanying other allergy symptoms.
  • Difficulty Breathing: In more severe allergic reactions, breathing difficulties or wheezing may occur.
  • Digestive Issues: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, particularly in food allergies.
