Meningococcal (MenACWY and MenB) Vaccines

Protect your child from meningitis with MenACWY and MenB vaccines.

Understanding Meningococcal

The Meningococcal vaccines, including MenACWY and MenB, protect against meningococcal disease caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. Meningococcal disease can lead to serious infections such as meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord) and septicemia (bloodstream infection). These infections can develop rapidly and are potentially life-threatening. The MenACWY vaccine covers four serogroups (A, C, W, and Y), while the MenB vaccine protects against serogroup B.

Recognizing Symptoms of Meningococcal

You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate meningococcal disease:

Meningitis

  • Fever: Sudden onset of high fever.
  • Severe Headache: Intense headache that may be accompanied by sensitivity to light.
  • Stiff Neck: Difficulty in moving the neck, often causing pain.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Gastrointestinal symptoms that may occur alongside other symptoms.
  • Confusion: Altered mental state, confusion, or irritability.
  • Rash: A rash that may develop into purplish spots or blotches, indicative of septicemia.

Septicemia (Bloodstream Infection)

  • Cold Hands and Feet: Often accompanied by chills and shivering.
  • Rapid Breathing: Fast or labored breathing.
  • Muscle and Joint Pain: Severe pain that may be accompanied by tenderness or swelling.
  • Pale or Mottled Skin: Changes in skin color, sometimes with a blotchy or purplish appearance.
