Understanding Colds

Colds, also known as the common cold, are viral infections that affect the upper respiratory tract, including the nose and throat. They are highly contagious and are caused by a variety of viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses. Colds are frequent in children, particularly during the fall and winter months.

Recognizing Symptoms of a Cold

You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate a cold:

  • Runny or Stuffy Nose: Clear, yellow, or green nasal discharge, often accompanied by congestion.
  • Sore Throat: Irritation and soreness in the throat, which can cause discomfort when swallowing.
  • Coughing: Persistent cough that may be dry or produce mucus.
  • Sneezing: Frequent sneezing due to nasal irritation.
  • Mild Fever: Low-grade fever, typically less than 101Β°F (38.5Β°C).
  • Fatigue: General tiredness and lack of energy.
  • Body Aches: Mild muscle or body aches.
  • Headache: Mild headache accompanying other symptoms.
