Understanding Diarrhea

Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery stools and an increased frequency of bowel movements. It can be acute, lasting a few days, or chronic, lasting several weeks. Diarrhea can be caused by infections (viral, bacterial, or parasitic), food intolerances, medications, or underlying medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Recognizing Symptoms of Diarrhea

You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate diarrhea:

  • Frequent, Loose Stools: An increase in the frequency and looseness of bowel movements.
  • Abdominal Pain or Cramping: Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, often associated with bowel movements.
  • Urgency: A sudden, urgent need to have a bowel movement.
  • Dehydration: Signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, decreased urine output, or sunken eyes, especially if diarrhea is severe or prolonged.
  • Fever: A mild to moderate fever, which can accompany infections causing diarrhea.
  • Nausea or Vomiting: Gastrointestinal symptoms that often accompany diarrhea.
  • Bloating: A feeling of fullness or swelling in the abdomen.
