Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

We diagnose and treat urinary tract infections in children.

Understanding UTIs

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract and cause infection. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. UTIs are more common in girls than boys and can cause significant discomfort and potential complications if left untreated.

Recognizing Symptoms of a UTI

You might notice several signs in your child that could indicate a urinary tract infection:

  • Frequent Urination: An increased need to urinate frequently, often with only small amounts of urine.
  • Painful Urination: Pain or a burning sensation while urinating.
  • Abdominal Pain: Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area.
  • Fever: A fever without any other obvious cause.
  • Bedwetting: New episodes of bedwetting in a previously dry child.
  • Cloudy or Bloody Urine: Urine that appears cloudy, has a strong odor, or contains blood.
  • Irritability: Increased fussiness or irritability, especially in younger children who may not be able to verbalize their discomfort.
